PICK YOUR SWAMP. WE’LL POINT TO THE RIGHT MACHINE CLASS. Not every damp space needs the same appliance. Not every damp space needs an appliance at all.

This is the showroom map, not a 40-question science fair. Start where the moisture actually lives. Each destination owns its specific homeowner decision.
Five rooms. Five different rules.
- Basement: Temperature, continuing moisture load, drainage and water-entry problems can all overturn the box’s square-foot claim. Start with the leak check and determine whether portable or dedicated equipment makes sense.
- Bathroom: Try functioning exhaust ventilation and moisture-source correction before shoving a compressor beside a wet shower.
- Bedroom: Sound, compressor cycling, heat and safe placement matter alongside actual measured humidity. A useful machine that destroys your sleep is a bad deal.
- Main level / open floor: Is the air connected, or are you expecting one dehumidifier to negotiate with closed doors and walls?
- Crawl space: Fix water and enclosure defects; where a machine is justified, treat temperature, permanent drainage and service access as first-class buying requirements.

Know the problem, but not the machine?
Head to Find Your Machine. It compares the real equipment classes: passive absorbers, light-duty solutions, standard portables, higher-moisture portables, pump-equipped units, and dedicated or ductable residential systems.
Want to decode the confusing parts first?
Buying Help sorts out capacity, mini machines, hoses and pumps, useful features, and whether one unit can actually serve the area. These are supporting decisions—not an invitation to return to the store knowing less than when you walked in.
There is also a no-machine door
If you have water running through a foundation crack or dripping from a pipe, the first recommendation is repair the source. We’re here to recommend the right purchase, including no purchase.
Bruce’s parting words: Pick a room. See the conditions. Buy the machine that belongs there—or keep your money when it doesn’t.
